Religious historian Karen Armstrong, discusses her latest book, "Islam: A Short History." In this concise volume, she examines both the history of one of the world's oldest and most complex faiths, and the contemporary political forces that are making it the fastest-growing and one of the most controversial religions in the world.
The interview was conducted by Suzanne Page, on the Diane Rehm Show, WAMU-FHM.
Unfortunately, there are a few mistakes, made by Karen:
- Muhammad was not a poet. "We have not instructed the (Prophet) in Poetry, nor is it meet for him: this is no less than a Message and a Qur'an making things clear" - Qur'an 36:69
- Islam is a universal message, made universal during the lifetime of the prophet Muhammad(pbuh), not after his death. " And We have not sent you ( O Muhammed ) except as a giver of glad tidings and a warner to all mankind." - Qur'an 34:28. The prophet Muhammad(pbuh) said: " I have been sent to all mankind and Prophethood is closed with me."
- Lieing (taq'ia) is part of the religion of Shiate, and is not part of Islam. Shiates constitute a very small percentage of muslims, and as mentioned in the FAQ, many of the Shiates are not considered muslim, as their beliefs are contrary to the fundamentals of belief, eg attributing qualities of God to humans (Imams) etc.
- Literal meaning of Jihad, is struggle, but the doctrinal meaning of Jihad is to struggle against disbelief (kufr).
- Secularism, is totally against the teachings of Islam. In Islam divisions between the sacred and secular hold little meaning. Everything we do here in the earthly domain has an immediate impact on the sacred and spiritual domain.
