In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
[37:1]
YUSUFALI: By those who range themselves in ranks,
PICKTHAL: By those who set the ranks in battle order
SHAKIR: swear by those who draw themselves out in ranks
[37:2]
YUSUFALI: And so are strong in repelling (evil),
PICKTHAL: And those who drive away (the wicked) with reproof
SHAKIR: hen those who drive away with reproof,
[37:3]
YUSUFALI: And thus proclaim the Message (of Allah)!
PICKTHAL: And those who read (the Word) for a reminder,
SHAKIR: hen those who recite, being mindful,
[37:4]
YUSUFALI: Verily, verily, your Allah is one!-
PICKTHAL: Lo! thy Lord is surely One;
SHAKIR: ost surely your Allah is One:
[37:5]
YUSUFALI: Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all between them, and Lord of every point at the rising of the sun!
PICKTHAL: Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all that is between them, and Lord of the sun's risings.
SHAKIR: he Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, and Lord of the easts.
[37:6]
YUSUFALI: We have indeed decked the lower heaven with beauty (in) the stars,-
PICKTHAL: Lo! We have adorned the lowest heaven with an ornament, the planets;
SHAKIR: urely We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment, the stars,
[37:7]
YUSUFALI: (For beauty) and for guard against all obstinate rebellious evil spirits,
PICKTHAL: With security from every froward devil.
SHAKIR: nd (there is) a safeguard against every rebellious Shaitan.
[37:8]
YUSUFALI: (So) they should not strain their ears in the direction of the Exalted Assembly but be cast away from every side,
PICKTHAL: They cannot listen to the Highest Chiefs for they are pelted from every side,
SHAKIR: hey cannot listen to the exalted assembly and they are thrown at from every side,
[37:9]
YUSUFALI: Repulsed, for they are under a perpetual penalty,
PICKTHAL: Outcast, and theirs is a perpetual torment;
SHAKIR: eing driven off, and for them is a perpetual chastisement,
[37:10]
YUSUFALI: Except such as snatch away something by stealth, and they are pursued by a flaming fire, of piercing brightness.
PICKTHAL: Save him who snatcheth a fragment, and there pursueth him a piercing flame.
SHAKIR: xcept him who snatches off but once, then there follows him a brightly shining flame.
[37:11]
YUSUFALI: Just ask their opinion: are they the more difficult to create, or the (other) beings We have created? Them have We created out of a sticky clay!
PICKTHAL: Then ask them (O Muhammad): Are they stronger as a creation, or those (others) whom we have created? Lo! We created them of plastic clay.
SHAKIR: hen ask them whether they are stronger in creation or those (others) whom We have created. Surely We created them of firm clay.
[37:12]
YUSUFALI: Truly dost thou marvel, while they ridicule,
PICKTHAL: Nay, but thou dost marvel when they mock
SHAKIR: ay! you wonder while they mock,
[37:13]
YUSUFALI: And, when they are admonished, pay no heed,-
PICKTHAL: And heed not when they are reminded,
SHAKIR: nd when they are reminded, they mind not,
[37:14]
YUSUFALI: And, when they see a Sign, turn it to mockery,
PICKTHAL: And seek to scoff when they behold a portent.
SHAKIR: nd when they see a sign they incite one another to scoff,
[37:15]
YUSUFALI: And say, This is nothing but evident sorcery!
PICKTHAL: And they say: Lo! this is mere magic;
SHAKIR: nd they say: This is nothing but clear magic:
[37:16]
YUSUFALI: What! when we die, and become dust and bones, shall we (then) be raised up (again)
PICKTHAL: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised (again)?
SHAKIR: hat! when we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then certainly be raised,
[37:17]
YUSUFALI: And also our fathers of old?
PICKTHAL: And our forefathers?
SHAKIR: r our fathers of yore?
[37:18]
YUSUFALI: Say thou: Yea, and ye shall then be humiliated (on account of your evil).
PICKTHAL: Say (O Muhammad): Ye, in truth; and ye will be brought low.
SHAKIR: ay: Aye! and you shall be abject.
[37:19]
YUSUFALI: Then it will be a single (compelling) cry; and behold, they will begin to see!
PICKTHAL: There is but one Shout, and lo! they behold,
SHAKIR: o it shall only be a single cry, when lo! they shall see.
[37:20]
YUSUFALI: They will say, Ah! Woe to us! This is the Day of Judgment!
PICKTHAL: And say: Ah, woe for us! This is the Day of Judgment.
SHAKIR: nd they shall say: O woe to us! this is the day of requital.
[37:21]
YUSUFALI: (A voice will say,) This is the Day of Sorting Out, whose truth ye (once) denied!
PICKTHAL: This is the Day of Separation, which ye used to deny.
SHAKIR: his is the day of the judgment which you called a lie.
[37:22]
YUSUFALI: Bring ye up, it shall be said, The wrong-doers and their wives, and the things they worshipped-
PICKTHAL: (And it is said unto the angels): Assemble those who did wrong, together with their wives and what they used to worship
SHAKIR: ather together those who were unjust and their associates, and what they used to worship
[37:23]
YUSUFALI: Besides Allah, and lead them to the Way to the (Fierce) Fire!
PICKTHAL: Instead of Allah, and lead them to the path to hell;
SHAKIR: esides Allah, then lead them to the way to hell.
[37:24]
YUSUFALI: But stop them, for they must be asked:
PICKTHAL: And stop them, for they must be questioned.
SHAKIR: nd stop them, for they shall be questioned:
[37:25]
YUSUFALI: 'What is the matter with you that ye help not each other?'
PICKTHAL: What aileth you that ye help not one another?
SHAKIR: hat is the matter with you that you do not help each other?
[37:26]
YUSUFALI: Nay, but that day they shall submit (to Judgment);
PICKTHAL: Nay, but this day they make full submission.
SHAKIR: ay! on that day they shall be submissive.
[37:27]
YUSUFALI: And they will turn to one another, and question one another.
PICKTHAL: And some of them draw near unto others, mutually questioning.
SHAKIR: nd some of them shall advance towards others, questioning each other.
[37:28]
YUSUFALI: They will say: It was ye who used to come to us from the right hand (of power and authority)!
PICKTHAL: They say: Lo! ye used to come unto us, imposing, (swearing that ye spoke the truth).
SHAKIR: hey shall say: Surely you used to come to us from the right side.
[37:29]
YUSUFALI: They will reply: Nay, ye yourselves had no Faith!
PICKTHAL: They answer: Nay, but ye (yourselves) were not believers.
SHAKIR: hey shall say: Nay, you (yourselves) were not believers;
[37:30]
YUSUFALI: Nor had we any authority over you. Nay, it was ye who were a people in obstinate rebellion!
PICKTHAL: We had no power over you, but ye were wayward folk.
SHAKIR: nd we had no authority over you, but you were an inordinate people;
[37:31]
YUSUFALI: So now has been proved true, against us, the word of our Lord that we shall indeed (have to) taste (the punishment of our sins).
PICKTHAL: Now the Word of our Lord hath been fulfilled concerning us. Lo! we are about to taste (the doom).
SHAKIR: o the sentence of our Lord has come to pass against us: (now) we shall surely taste;
[37:32]
YUSUFALI: We led you astray: for truly we were ourselves astray.
PICKTHAL: Thus we misled you. Lo! we were (ourselves) astray.
SHAKIR: o we led you astray, for we ourselves were erring.
[37:33]
YUSUFALI: Truly, that Day, they will (all) share in the Penalty.
PICKTHAL: Then lo! this day they (both) are sharers in the doom.
SHAKIR: o they shall on that day be sharers in the chastisement one with another.
[37:34]
YUSUFALI: Verily that is how We shall deal with Sinners.
PICKTHAL: Lo! thus deal We with the guilty.
SHAKIR: urely thus do We deal with the guilty.
[37:35]
YUSUFALI: For they, when they were told that there is no god except Allah, would puff themselves up with Pride,
PICKTHAL: For when it was said unto them, There is no Allah save Allah, they were scornful
SHAKIR: urely they used to behave proudly when it was said to them: There is no god but Allah;
[37:36]
YUSUFALI: And say: What! shall we give up our gods for the sake of a Poet possessed?
PICKTHAL: And said: Shall we forsake our gods for a mad poet?
SHAKIR: nd to say: What! shall we indeed give up our gods for the sake of a mad poet?
[37:37]
YUSUFALI: Nay! he has come with the (very) Truth, and he confirms (the Message of) the messengers (before him).
PICKTHAL: Nay, but he brought the Truth, and he confirmed those sent (before him).
SHAKIR: ay: he has come with the truth and verified the messengers.
[37:38]
YUSUFALI: Ye shall indeed taste of the Grievous Penalty;-
PICKTHAL: Lo! (now) verily ye taste the painful doom -
SHAKIR: ost surely you will taste the painful punishment.
[37:39]
YUSUFALI: But it will be no more than the retribution of (the Evil) that ye have wrought;-
PICKTHAL: Ye are requited naught save what ye did -
SHAKIR: nd you shall not be rewarded except (for) what you did.
[37:40]
YUSUFALI: But the sincere (and devoted) Servants of Allah,-
PICKTHAL: Save single-minded slaves of Allah;
SHAKIR: ave the servants of Allah, the purified ones.
[37:41]
YUSUFALI: For them is a Sustenance determined,
PICKTHAL: For them there is a known provision,
SHAKIR: or them is a known sustenance,
[37:42]
YUSUFALI: Fruits (Delights); and they (shall enjoy) honour and dignity,
PICKTHAL: Fruits. And they will be honoured
SHAKIR: ruits, and they shall be highly honored,
[37:43]
YUSUFALI: In Gardens of Felicity,
PICKTHAL: In the Gardens of delight,
SHAKIR: n gardens of pleasure,
[37:44]
YUSUFALI: Facing each other on Thrones (of Dignity):
PICKTHAL: On couches facing one another;
SHAKIR: n thrones, facing each other.
[37:45]
YUSUFALI: Round will be passed to them a Cup from a clear-flowing fountain,
PICKTHAL: A cup from a gushing spring is brought round for them,
SHAKIR: bowl shall be made to go round them from water running out of springs,
[37:46]
YUSUFALI: Crystal-white, of a taste delicious to those who drink (thereof),
PICKTHAL: White, delicious to the drinkers,
SHAKIR: hite, delicious to those who drink.
[37:47]
YUSUFALI: Free from headiness; nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom.
PICKTHAL: Wherein there is no headache nor are they made mad thereby.
SHAKIR: here shall be no trouble in it, nor shall they be exhausted therewith.
[37:48]
YUSUFALI: And besides them will be chaste women, restraining their glances, with big eyes (of wonder and beauty).
PICKTHAL: And with them are those of modest gaze, with lovely eyes,
SHAKIR: nd with them shall be those who restrain the eyes, having beautiful eyes;
[37:49]
YUSUFALI: As if they were (delicate) eggs closely guarded.
PICKTHAL: (Pure) as they were hidden eggs (of the ostrich).
SHAKIR: s if they were eggs carefully protected.
[37:50]
YUSUFALI: Then they will turn to one another and question one another.
PICKTHAL: And some of them draw near unto others, mutually questioning.
SHAKIR: hen shall some of them advance to others, questioning each other.
[37:51]
YUSUFALI: One of them will start the talk and say: I had an intimate companion (on the earth),
PICKTHAL: A speaker of them saith: Lo! I had a comrade
SHAKIR: speaker from among them shall say: Surely I had a comrade of mine,
[37:52]
YUSUFALI: Who used to say, 'what! art thou amongst those who bear witness to the Truth (of the Message)?
PICKTHAL: Who used to say: Art thou in truth of those who put faith (in his words)?
SHAKIR: ho said: What! are you indeed of those who accept (the truth)?
[37:53]
YUSUFALI: 'When we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed receive rewards and punishments?'
PICKTHAL: Can we, when we are dead and have become mere dust and bones - can we (then) verily be brought to book?
SHAKIR: hat! when we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then be certainly brought to judgment?
[37:54]
YUSUFALI: (A voice) said: Would ye like to look down?
PICKTHAL: He saith: Will ye look?
SHAKIR: e shall say: Will you look on?
[37:55]
YUSUFALI: He looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire.
PICKTHAL: Then looketh he and seeth him in the depth of hell.
SHAKIR: hen he looked down and saw him in the midst of hell.
[37:56]
YUSUFALI: He said: By Allah! thou wast little short of bringing me to perdition!
PICKTHAL: He saith: By Allah, thou verily didst all but cause my ruin,
SHAKIR: e shall say: By Allah! you had almost caused me to perish;
[37:57]
YUSUFALI: Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I should certainly have been among those brought (there)!
PICKTHAL: And had it not been for the favour of my Lord, I too had been of those haled forth (to doom).
SHAKIR: nd had it not been for the favor of my Lord, I would certainly have been among those brought up.
[37:58]
YUSUFALI: Is it (the case) that we shall not die,
PICKTHAL: Are we then not to die
SHAKIR: s it then that we are not going to die,
[37:59]
YUSUFALI: Except our first death, and that we shall not be punished?
PICKTHAL: Saving our former death, and are we not to be punished?
SHAKIR: xcept our previous death? And we shall not be chastised?
[37:60]
YUSUFALI: Verily this is the supreme achievement!
PICKTHAL: Lo! this is the supreme triumph.
SHAKIR: ost surely this is the mighty achievement.
[37:61]
YUSUFALI: For the like of this let all strive, who wish to strive.
PICKTHAL: For the like of this, then, let the workers work.
SHAKIR: or the like of this then let the workers work.
[37:62]
YUSUFALI: Is that the better entertainment or the Tree of Zaqqum?
PICKTHAL: Is this better as a welcome, or the tree of Zaqqum?
SHAKIR: s this better as an entertainment or the tree of Zaqqum?
[37:63]
YUSUFALI: For We have truly made it (as) a trial for the wrong-doers.
PICKTHAL: Lo! We have appointed it a torment for wrong-doers.
SHAKIR: urely We have made it to be a trial to the unjust.
[37:64]
YUSUFALI: For it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hell-Fire:
PICKTHAL: Lo! it is a tree that springeth in the heart of hell.
SHAKIR: urely it is a tree that-grows in the bottom of the hell;
[37:65]
YUSUFALI: The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of devils:
PICKTHAL: Its crop is as it were the heads of devils
SHAKIR: ts produce is as it were the heads of the serpents.
[37:66]
YUSUFALI: Truly they will eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith.
PICKTHAL: And lo! they verily must eat thereof, and fill (their) bellies therewith.
SHAKIR: hen most surely they shall eat of it and fill (their) bellies with it.
[37:67]
YUSUFALI: Then on top of that they will be given a mixture made of boiling water.
PICKTHAL: And afterward, lo! thereupon they have a drink of boiling water
SHAKIR: hen most surely they shall have after it to drink of a mixture prepared in boiling water.
[37:68]
YUSUFALI: Then shall their return be to the (Blazing) Fire.
PICKTHAL: And afterward, lo! their return is surely unto hell.
SHAKIR: hen most surely their return shall be to hell.
[37:69]
YUSUFALI: Truly they found their fathers on the wrong Path;
PICKTHAL: They indeed found their fathers astray,
SHAKIR: urely they found their fathers going astray,
[37:70]
YUSUFALI: So they (too) were rushed down on their footsteps!
PICKTHAL: But they make haste (to follow) in their footsteps.
SHAKIR: o in their footsteps they are being hastened on.
[37:71]
YUSUFALI: And truly before them, many of the ancients went astray;-
PICKTHAL: And verily most of the men of old went astray before them,
SHAKIR: nd certainly most of the ancients went astray before them,
[37:72]
YUSUFALI: But We sent aforetime, among them, (messengers) to admonish them;-
PICKTHAL: And verily We sent among them warners.
SHAKIR: nd certainly We sent among them warners.
[37:73]
YUSUFALI: Then see what was the end of those who were admonished (but heeded not),-
PICKTHAL: Then see the nature of the consequence for those warned,
SHAKIR: hen see how was the end of those warned,
[37:74]
YUSUFALI: Except the sincere (and devoted) Servants of Allah.
PICKTHAL: Save single-minded slaves of Allah.
SHAKIR: xcept the servants of Allah, the purified ones.
[37:75]
YUSUFALI: (In the days of old), Noah cried to Us, and We are the best to hear prayer.
PICKTHAL: And Noah verily prayed unto Us, and gracious was the Hearer of his prayer
SHAKIR: nd Nuh did certainly call upon Us, and most excellent answerer of prayer are We.
[37:76]
YUSUFALI: And We delivered him and his people from the Great Calamity,
PICKTHAL: And We saved him and his household from the great distress,
SHAKIR: nd We delivered him and his followers from the mighty distress.
[37:77]
YUSUFALI: And made his progeny to endure (on this earth);
PICKTHAL: And made his seed the survivors,
SHAKIR: nd We made his offspring the survivors.
[37:78]
YUSUFALI: And We left (this blessing) for him among generations to come in later times:
PICKTHAL: And left for him among the later folk (the salutation):
SHAKIR: nd We perpetuated to him (praise) among the later generations.
[37:79]
YUSUFALI: Peace and salutation to Noah among the nations!
PICKTHAL: Peace be unto Noah among the peoples!
SHAKIR: eace and salutation to Nuh among the nations.
[37:80]
YUSUFALI: Thus indeed do we reward those who do right.
PICKTHAL: Lo! thus do We reward the good.
SHAKIR: hus do We surely reward the doers of good.
[37:81]
YUSUFALI: For he was one of our believing Servants.
PICKTHAL: Lo! he is one of Our believing slaves.
SHAKIR: urely he was of Our believing servants.
[37:82]
YUSUFALI: Then the rest we overwhelmed in the Flood.
PICKTHAL: Then We did drown the others.
SHAKIR: hen We drowned the others
[37:83]
YUSUFALI: Verily among those who followed his Way was Abraham.
PICKTHAL: And lo! of his persuasion verily was Abraham
SHAKIR: nd most surely Ibrahim followed his way.
[37:84]
YUSUFALI: Behold! he approached his Lord with a sound heart.
PICKTHAL: When he came unto his Lord with a whole heart;
SHAKIR: hen he came to his Lord with a free heart,
[37:85]
YUSUFALI: Behold! he said to his father and to his people, What is that which ye worship?
PICKTHAL: When he said unto his father and his folk: What is it that ye worship?
SHAKIR: hen he said to his father and his people: What is it that you worship?
[37:86]
YUSUFALI: Is it a falsehood- gods other than Allah- that ye desire?
PICKTHAL: Is it a falsehood - gods beside Allah - that ye desire?
SHAKIR: lie-- gods besides Allah-- do you desire?
[37:87]
YUSUFALI: Then what is your idea about the Lord of the worlds?
PICKTHAL: What then is your opinion of the Lord of the Worlds?
SHAKIR: hat is then your idea about the Lord of the worlds?
[37:88]
YUSUFALI: Then did he cast a glance at the Stars.
PICKTHAL: And he glanced a glance at the stars
SHAKIR: hen he looked at the stars, looking up once,
[37:89]
YUSUFALI: And he said, I am indeed sick (at heart)!
PICKTHAL: Then said: Lo! I feel sick!
SHAKIR: hen he said: Surely I am sick (of your worshipping these).
[37:90]
YUSUFALI: So they turned away from him, and departed.
PICKTHAL: And they turned their backs and went away from him.
SHAKIR: o they went away from him, turning back.
[37:91]
YUSUFALI: Then did he turn to their gods and said, will ye not eat (of the offerings before you)?...
PICKTHAL: Then turned he to their gods and said: Will ye not eat?
SHAKIR: hen he turned aside to their gods secretly and said: What! do you not eat?
[37:92]
YUSUFALI: What is the matter with you that ye speak not (intelligently)?
PICKTHAL: What aileth you that ye speak not?
SHAKIR: hat is the matter with you that you do not speak?
[37:93]
YUSUFALI: Then did he turn upon them, striking (them) with the right hand.
PICKTHAL: Then he attacked them, striking with his right hand.
SHAKIR: hen he turned against them secretly, smiting them with the right hand.
[37:94]
YUSUFALI: Then came (the worshippers) with hurried steps, and faced (him).
PICKTHAL: And (his people) came toward him, hastening.
SHAKIR: o they (people) advanced towards him, hastening.
[37:95]
YUSUFALI: He said: Worship ye that which ye have (yourselves) carved?
PICKTHAL: He said: Worship ye that which ye yourselves do carve
SHAKIR: aid he: What! do you worship what you hew out?
[37:96]
YUSUFALI: But Allah has created you and your handwork!
PICKTHAL: When Allah hath created you and what ye make?
SHAKIR: nd Allah has created you and what you make.
[37:97]
YUSUFALI: They said, Build him a furnace, and throw him into the blazing fire!
PICKTHAL: They said: Build for him a building and fling him in the red-hotfire.
SHAKIR: hey said: Build for him a furnace, then cast him into the burning fire.
[37:98]
YUSUFALI: (This failing), they then sought a stratagem against him, but We made them the ones most humiliated!
PICKTHAL: And they designed a snare for him, but We made them the undermost.
SHAKIR: nd they desired a war against him, but We brought them low.
[37:99]
YUSUFALI: He said: I will go to my Lord! He will surely guide me!
PICKTHAL: And he said: Lo! I am going unto my Lord Who will guide me.
SHAKIR: nd he said: Surely I fly to my lord; He will guide me.
[37:100]
YUSUFALI: O my Lord! Grant me a righteous (son)!
PICKTHAL: My Lord! Vouchsafe me of the righteous.
SHAKIR: y Lord! grant me of the doers of good deeds.
[37:101]
YUSUFALI: So We gave him the good news of a boy ready to suffer and forbear.
PICKTHAL: So We gave him tidings of a gentle son.
SHAKIR: o We gave him the good news of a boy, possessing forbearance.
[37:102]
YUSUFALI: Then, when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him, he said: O my son! I see in vision that I offer thee in sacrifice: Now see what is thy view! (The son) said: O my father! Do as thou art commanded: thou will find me, if Allah so wills one practising Patience and Constancy!
PICKTHAL: And when (his son) was old enough to walk with him, (Abraham) said: O my dear son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice thee. So look, what thinkest thou? He said: O my father! Do that which thou art commanded. Allah willing, thou shalt find me of the steadfast.
SHAKIR: nd when he attained to working with him, he said: O my son! surely I have seen in a dream that I should sacrifice you; consider then what you see. He said: O my father! do what you are commanded; if Allah please, you will find me of the patient ones.
[37:103]
YUSUFALI: So when they had both submitted their wills (to Allah), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice),
PICKTHAL: Then, when they had both surrendered (to Allah), and he had flung him down upon his face,
SHAKIR: o when they both submitted and he threw him down upon his forehead,
[37:104]
YUSUFALI: We called out to him O Abraham!
PICKTHAL: We called unto him: O Abraham!
SHAKIR: nd We called out to him saying: O Ibrahim!
[37:105]
YUSUFALI: Thou hast already fulfilled the vision! - thus indeed do We reward those who do right.
PICKTHAL: Thou hast already fulfilled the vision. Lo! thus do We reward the good.
SHAKIR: ou have indeed shown the truth of the vision; surely thus do We reward the doers of good:
[37:106]
YUSUFALI: For this was obviously a trial-
PICKTHAL: Lo! that verily was a clear test.
SHAKIR: ost surely this is a manifest trial.
[37:107]
YUSUFALI: And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice:
PICKTHAL: Then We ransomed him with a tremendous victim.
SHAKIR: nd We ransomed him with a Feat sacrifice.
[37:108]
YUSUFALI: And We left (this blessing) for him among generations (to come) in later times:
PICKTHAL: And We left for him among the later folk (the salutation):
SHAKIR: nd We perpetuated (praise) to him among the later generations.
[37:109]
YUSUFALI: Peace and salutation to Abraham!
PICKTHAL: Peace be unto Abraham!
SHAKIR: eace be on Ibrahim.
[37:110]
YUSUFALI: Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.
PICKTHAL: Thus do We reward the good.
SHAKIR: hus do We reward the doers of good.
[37:111]
YUSUFALI: For he was one of our believing Servants.
PICKTHAL: Lo! he is one of Our believing slaves.
SHAKIR: urely he was one of Our believing servants.
[37:112]
YUSUFALI: And We gave him the good news of Isaac - a prophet,- one of the Righteous.
PICKTHAL: And we gave him tidings of the birth of Isaac, a prophet of the righteous.
SHAKIR: nd We gave him the good news of Ishaq, a prophet among the good ones.
[37:113]
YUSUFALI: We blessed him and Isaac: but of their progeny are (some) that do right, and (some) that obviously do wrong, to their own souls.
PICKTHAL: And We blessed him and Isaac. And of their seed are some who do good, and some who plainly wrong themselves.
SHAKIR: nd We showered Our blessings on him and on Ishaq; and of their offspring are the doers of good, and (also) those who are clearly unjust to their own souls.
[37:114]
YUSUFALI: Again (of old) We bestowed Our favour on Moses and Aaron,
PICKTHAL: And We verily gave grace unto Moses and Aaron,
SHAKIR: nd certainly We conferred a favor on Musa and Haroun.
[37:115]
YUSUFALI: And We delivered them and their people from (their) Great Calamity;
PICKTHAL: And saved them and their people from the great distress,
SHAKIR: nd We delivered them both and their people from the mighty distress.
[37:116]
YUSUFALI: And We helped them, so they overcame (their troubles);
PICKTHAL: And helped them so that they became the victors.
SHAKIR: nd We helped them, so they were the vanquishers.
[37:117]
YUSUFALI: And We gave them the Book which helps to make things clear;
PICKTHAL: And We gave them the clear Scripture
SHAKIR: nd We gave them both the Book that made (things) clear.
[37:118]
YUSUFALI: And We guided them to the Straight Way.
PICKTHAL: And showed them the right path.
SHAKIR: nd We guided them both on the right way.
[37:119]
YUSUFALI: And We left (this blessing) for them among generations (to come) in later times:
PICKTHAL: And We left for them among the later folk (the salutation):
SHAKIR: nd We perpetuated (praise) to them among the later generations.
[37:120]
YUSUFALI: Peace and salutation to Moses and Aaron!
PICKTHAL: Peace be unto Moses and Aaron!
SHAKIR: eace be on Musa and Haroun.
[37:121]
YUSUFALI: Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.
PICKTHAL: Lo! thus do We reward the good.
SHAKIR: ven thus do We reward the doers of good.
[37:122]
YUSUFALI: For they were two of our believing Servants.
PICKTHAL: Lo! they are two of Our believing slaves.
SHAKIR: urely they were both of Our believing servants.
[37:123]
YUSUFALI: So also was Elias among those sent (by Us).
PICKTHAL: And lo! Elias was of those sent (to warn),
SHAKIR: nd Ilyas was most surely of the messengers.
[37:124]
YUSUFALI: Behold, he said to his people, Will ye not fear (Allah)?
PICKTHAL: When he said unto his folk: Will ye not ward off (evil)?
SHAKIR: hen he said to his people: Do you not guard (against evil)?
[37:125]
YUSUFALI: Will ye call upon Baal and forsake the Best of Creators,-
PICKTHAL: Will ye cry unto Baal and forsake the Best of creators,
SHAKIR: hat! do you call upon Ba'l and forsake the best of the creators,
[37:126]
YUSUFALI: Allah, your Lord and Cherisher and the Lord and Cherisher of your fathers of old?
PICKTHAL: Allah, your Lord and Lord of your forefathers?
SHAKIR: llah, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore?
[37:127]
YUSUFALI: But they rejected him, and they will certainly be called up (for punishment),-
PICKTHAL: But they denied him, so they surely will be haled forth (to the doom)
SHAKIR: ut they called him a liar, therefore they shall most surely be brought up.
[37:128]
YUSUFALI: Except the sincere and devoted Servants of Allah (among them).
PICKTHAL: Save single-minded slaves of Allah.
SHAKIR: ut not the servants of Allah, the purified ones.
[37:129]
YUSUFALI: And We left (this blessing) for him among generations (to come) in later times:
PICKTHAL: And we left for him among the later folk (the salutation):
SHAKIR: nd We perpetuated to him (praise) among the later generations.
[37:130]
YUSUFALI: Peace and salutation to such as Elias!
PICKTHAL: Peace be unto Elias!
SHAKIR: eace be on Ilyas.
[37:131]
YUSUFALI: Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.
PICKTHAL: Lo! thus do We reward the good.
SHAKIR: ven thus do We reward the doers of good.
[37:132]
YUSUFALI: For he was one of our believing Servants.
PICKTHAL: Lo! he is one of our believing slaves.
SHAKIR: urely he was one of Our believing servants. [37:133]
YUSUFALI: So also was Lut among those sent (by Us).
PICKTHAL: And lo! Lot verily was of those sent (to warn).
SHAKIR: nd Lut was most surely of the messengers.
[37:134]
YUSUFALI: Behold, We delivered him and his adherents, all
PICKTHAL: When We saved him and his household, every one,
SHAKIR: hen We delivered him and his followers, all--
[37:135]
YUSUFALI: Except an old woman who was among those who lagged behind:
PICKTHAL: Save an old woman among those who stayed behind;
SHAKIR: xcept an old woman (who was) amongst those who tarried.
[37:136]
YUSUFALI: Then We destroyed the rest.
PICKTHAL: Then We destroyed the others.
SHAKIR: hen We destroyed the others.
[37:137]
YUSUFALI: Verily, ye pass by their (sites), by day-
PICKTHAL: And lo! ye verily pass by (the ruin of) them in the morning
SHAKIR: nd most surely you pass by them in the morning,
[37:138]
YUSUFALI: And by night: will ye not understand?
PICKTHAL: And at night-time; have ye then no sense?
SHAKIR: nd at night; do you not then understand?
[37:139]
YUSUFALI: So also was Jonah among those sent (by Us).
PICKTHAL: And lo! Jonah verily was of those sent (to warn)
SHAKIR: nd Yunus was most surely of the messengers.
[37:140]
YUSUFALI: When he ran away (like a slave from captivity) to the ship (fully) laden,
PICKTHAL: When he fled unto the laden ship,
SHAKIR: hen he ran away to a ship completely laden,
[37:141]
YUSUFALI: He (agreed to) cast lots, and he was condemned:
PICKTHAL: And then drew lots and was of those rejected;
SHAKIR: o he shared (with them), but was of those who are cast off.
[37:142]
YUSUFALI: Then the big Fish did swallow him, and he had done acts worthy of blame.
PICKTHAL: And the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy;
SHAKIR: o the fish swallowed him while he did that for which he blamed himself
[37:143]
YUSUFALI: Had it not been that he (repented and) glorified Allah,
PICKTHAL: And had he not been one of those who glorify (Allah)
SHAKIR: ut had it not been that he was of those who glorify (Us),
[37:144]
YUSUFALI: He would certainly have remained inside the Fish till the Day of Resurrection.
PICKTHAL: He would have tarried in its belly till the day when they are raised;
SHAKIR: e would certainly have tarried in its belly to the day when they are raised.
[37:145]
YUSUFALI: But We cast him forth on the naked shore in a state of sickness,
PICKTHAL: Then We cast him on a desert shore while he was sick;
SHAKIR: hen We cast him on to the vacant surface of the earth while he was sick.
[37:146]
YUSUFALI: And We caused to grow, over him, a spreading plant of the gourd kind.
PICKTHAL: And We caused a tree of gourd to grow above him;
SHAKIR: nd We caused to grow up for him a gourdplant. [37:147]
YUSUFALI: And We sent him (on a mission) to a hundred thousand (men) or more.
PICKTHAL: And We sent him to a hundred thousand (folk) or more
SHAKIR: nd We sent him to a hundred thousand, rather they exceeded.
[37:148]
YUSUFALI: And they believed; so We permitted them to enjoy (their life) for a while.
PICKTHAL: And they believed, therefor We gave them comfort for a while.
SHAKIR: nd they believed, so We gave them provision till a time.
[37:149]
YUSUFALI: Now ask them their opinion: Is it that thy Lord has (only) daughters, and they have sons?-
PICKTHAL: Now ask them (O Muhammad): Hath thy Lord daughters whereas they have sons?
SHAKIR: hen ask them whether your Lord has daughters and they have sons.
[37:150]
YUSUFALI: Or that We created the angels female, and they are witnesses (thereto)?
PICKTHAL: Or created We the angels females while they were present?
SHAKIR: r did We create the angels females while they were witnesses?
[37:151]
YUSUFALI: Is it not that they say, from their own invention,
PICKTHAL: Lo! it is of their falsehood that they say:
SHAKIR: ow surely it is of their own lie that they say:
[37:152]
YUSUFALI: Allah has begotten children? but they are liars!
PICKTHAL: Allah hath begotten. Allah! verily they tell a lie.
SHAKIR: llah has begotten; and most surely they are liars.
[37:153]
YUSUFALI: Did He (then) choose daughters rather than sons?
PICKTHAL: (And again of their falsehood): He hath preferred daughters to sons.
SHAKIR: as He chosen daughters in preference to sons?
[37:154]
YUSUFALI: What is the matter with you? How judge ye?
PICKTHAL: What aileth you? How judge ye?
SHAKIR: hat is the matter with you, how is it that you judge?
[37:155]
YUSUFALI: Will ye not then receive admonition?
PICKTHAL: Will ye not then reflect?
SHAKIR: ill you not then mind?
[37:156]
YUSUFALI: Or have ye an authority manifest?
PICKTHAL: Or have ye a clear warrant?
SHAKIR: r have you a clear authority?
[37:157]
YUSUFALI: Then bring ye your Book (of authority) if ye be truthful!
PICKTHAL: Then produce your writ, if ye are truthful.
SHAKIR: hen bring your book, if you are truthful.
[37:158]
YUSUFALI: And they have invented a blood-relationship between Him and the Jinns: but the Jinns know (quite well) that they have indeed to appear (before his Judgment-Seat)!
PICKTHAL: And they imagine kinship between him and the jinn, whereas the jinn know well that they will be brought before (Him).
SHAKIR: nd they assert a relationship between Him and the jinn; and certainly the jinn do know that they shall surely be brought up;
[37:159]
YUSUFALI: Glory to Allah! (He is free) from the things they ascribe (to Him)!
PICKTHAL: Glorified be Allah from that which they attribute (unto Him),
SHAKIR: lory be to Allah (for freedom) from what they describe;
[37:160]
YUSUFALI: Not (so do) the Servants of Allah, sincere and devoted.
PICKTHAL: Save single-minded slaves of Allah.
SHAKIR: ut not so the servants of Allah, the purified ones.
[37:161]
YUSUFALI: For, verily, neither ye nor those ye worship-
PICKTHAL: Lo! verily, ye and that which ye worship,
SHAKIR: o surely you and what you worship,
[37:162]
YUSUFALI: Can lead (any) into temptation concerning Allah,
PICKTHAL: Ye cannot excite (anyone) against Him.
SHAKIR: ot against Him can you cause (any) to fall into trial,
[37:163]
YUSUFALI: Except such as are (themselves) going to the blazing Fire!
PICKTHAL: Save him who is to burn in hell.
SHAKIR: ave him who will go to hell.
[37:164]
YUSUFALI: (Those ranged in ranks say): Not one of us but has a place appointed;
PICKTHAL: There is not one of us but hath his known position.
SHAKIR: nd there is none of us but has an assigned place,
[37:165]
YUSUFALI: And we are verily ranged in ranks (for service);
PICKTHAL: Lo! we, even we are they who set the ranks,
SHAKIR: nd most surely we are they who draw themselves out in ranks,
[37:166]
YUSUFALI: And we are verily those who declare (Allah's) glory!
PICKTHAL: Lo! we, even we are they who hymn His praise
SHAKIR: nd we are most surely they who declare the glory (of Allah).
[37:167]
YUSUFALI: And there were those who said,
PICKTHAL: And indeed they used to say:
SHAKIR: nd surely they used to say:
[37:168)
YUSUFALI: If only we had had before us a Message from those of old,
PICKTHAL: If we had but a reminder from the men of old
SHAKIR: ad we a reminder from those of yore,
[37:169]
YUSUFALI: We should certainly have been Servants of Allah, sincere (and devoted)!
PICKTHAL: We would be single-minded slaves of Allah.
SHAKIR: e would certainly have been the servants of Allah-- the purified ones.
[37:170]
YUSUFALI: But (now that the Qur'an has come), they reject it: But soon will they know!
PICKTHAL: Yet (now that it is come) they disbelieve therein; but they will come to know.
SHAKIR: ut (now) they disbelieve in it, so they will come to know.
[37:171]
YUSUFALI: Already has Our Word been passed before (this) to our Servants sent (by Us),
PICKTHAL: And verily Our word went forth of old unto Our bondmen sent (to warn)
SHAKIR: nd certainly Our word has already gone forth in respect of Our servants, the messengers:
[37:172]
YUSUFALI: That they would certainly be assisted,
PICKTHAL: That they verily would be helped,
SHAKIR: ost surely they shall be the assisted ones
[37:173]
YUSUFALI: And that Our forces,- they surely must conquer.
PICKTHAL: And that Our host, they verily would be the victors.
SHAKIR: nd most surely Our host alone shall be the victorious ones.
[37:174]
YUSUFALI: So turn thou away from them for a little while,
PICKTHAL: So withdraw from them (O Muhammad) awhile,
SHAKIR: herefore turn away from them till a time,
[37:175]
YUSUFALI: And watch them (how they fare), and they soon shall see (how thou farest)!
PICKTHAL: And watch, for they will (soon) see.
SHAKIR: nd (then) see them, so they too shall see.
[37:176]
YUSUFALI: Do they wish (indeed) to hurry on our Punishment?
PICKTHAL: Would they hasten on Our doom?
SHAKIR: hat! would they then hasten on Our chastisement?
[37:177]
YUSUFALI: But when it descends into the open space before them, evil will be the morning for those who were warned (and heeded not)!
PICKTHAL: But when it cometh home to them, then it will be a hapless morn for those who have been warned.
SHAKIR: ut when it shall descend in their court, evil shall then be the morning of the warned ones.
[37:178]
YUSUFALI: So turn thou away from them for a little while,
PICKTHAL: Withdraw from them awhile
SHAKIR: nd turn away from them till a time
[37:179]
YUSUFALI: And watch (how they fare) and they soon shall see (how thou farest)!
PICKTHAL: And watch, for they will (soon) see.
SHAKIR: nd (then) see, for they too shall see.
[37:180]
YUSUFALI: Glory to thy Lord, the Lord of Honour and Power! (He is free) from what they ascribe (to Him)!
PICKTHAL: Glorified be thy Lord, the Lord of Majesty, from that which they attribute (unto Him)
SHAKIR: lory be to your Lord, the Lord of Honor, above what they describe.
[37:181]
YUSUFALI: And Peace on the messengers!
PICKTHAL: And peace be unto those sent (to warn).
SHAKIR: nd peace be on the messengers.
[37:182]
YUSUFALI: And Praise to Allah, the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds.
PICKTHAL: And praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds!
SHAKIR: nd all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
