Muhammad (pbuh) & other prophets

Q: What does pbuh mean?

A: pbuh means "peace be upon him". Muslims ask God to send peace to all prophets, when they hear their name, out of love and reverence for them.

Q: Do muslims believe only in Muhammad (pbuh) as their Prophet?

A: No! Muslims do believe in all of the Prophets and Messengers that Allah sent to mankind from the days of Adam to the days of the Prophet Muhammad. Their numbers are in the thousands or more. However, Allah mentioned 25 names in the Qur'an. Among them five who were mentioned to the Mighty and the most influential ones. Those are Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad.

Q: Is Muhammad a prophet or a messiah?

A: Muhammad made it very clear in his teachings that he was not the Messiah. He was a prophet who brought Allah's revelation to the people.

Q: Who is Mahound?

A: It is a derogatory name, given to the prophet of Islam, Muhammad(pbuh), by the West.

Islam remains the most unheeded major religion, and Muhammad remains the most maligned prophet. Islam has been under attack, without let-up, and the prophet has been given all sorts of derogatory names, such as Mahound etc.

The whole West did not have a single good word to say about the prophet. He was condemned blindly, and without trial. The church insisted on all authors and writers to add the word “impostor” after his name.

Likewise, the word Maometis means The number of the beast, i.e., 666, by which Muhammad(pbuh) was known in the Middle Ages. The names Mahoun and Mahound refer to Muhammad(pbuh), imagined by credulous Europeans to be a pagan God. These derogatory names were concocted by "love-thy-neighbor", "turn-thy-cheek" Christians who maintained an open policy of defamation against Islam and Muhammad(pbuh) throughout the Middle Ages. Apparently, this policy still exists today, though in a more sophisticated apparatus.

Q: Do prophets sin?

A: No. Prophats do not commit sins. They are human beings so they sometimes make errors or mistakes, but never sins in the sense that they are intentionally disobedient to Allah;or act out of motives of greed, personal hatred, envy, debauchery, etc.

In islam, it is generally assumed that those stories which have circulated in other scriptures, eg the bible, and which describe the Prophets commiting adultery and fornication, and involved in murder, drunkeness and idol worship;are lies, slanders ,and fabrications.

Allah knows the future, as well as everything else there is to know, and it would defeat His purpose to choose a Prophet[who's primary purpose is to act as a excellent example] who would act in a manner inconsistent or contrary to that purpose.

In Al Qur'an Allah says very explicitly that all of His representatives were true to their trust.

Q: But Adam sinned?

A: The Shaitan managed to convince Adam(pbuh) to eat from the tree, and swore in the name of God. Adam(pbuh) did not think someone could swear in God's name and lie. Hence, Adam(pbuh) made a misjudgement, not a sin. Adam(pbuh) repented for it and was forgiven by God.

Q: How many Prophets were there?

A: Only some two dozen Prophets are mentioned by name in the Holy Qur'an. However, there are many Islamic traditions that place the number at 124,000, which were sent by Allah at different times, to different locations, and to various people throughout the tenure of human beings on this planet.

It is universally accepted in Islam that Adam[upon whom be peace] was the first Prophet; and Muhammad[peace and blessings be upon him] was the last Prophet, and there will be no other Prophet after him.
